On the shores of Praia da Luz, within the beautiful Algarve region, lies a remarkable tradition that offers a unique glimpse into local heritage: Banho 29.

The 29th Bath Festival, a beloved event in Lagos and the Algarve, takes place on August 29th in both Lagos and Praia da Luz. This celebration features invigorating sea baths and performances by renowned musical acts.

According to local folklore, the sea bath on August 29th is believed to drive away evil spirits and is reputed to be as beneficial as 29 separate baths. The tradition, highlighted by the municipality of Lagos, has endured over the centuries, transforming a simple purification ritual into a festive occasion held in iconic locations such as Cais da Solaria, Jardim da Constitution, and Praia da Luz.

With August’s warm weather, Banho 29 provides an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty. The pleasant climate complements the experience, allowing you to relax and enjoy the calming effects of the thermal waters.

The Lagos Study Center invites visitors to travel back in time with a historical reenactment along Avenida dos Descobrimentos and Praia da Batata. This event recounts when locals would bring their picnics to enjoy a bath in the sea. The festivities kick off at 6:00 PM at Cais da Solaria and Jardim da Constitution, featuring a variety of entertainment. At 8:30 PM, ACRAL will host traditional swimwear competitions, showcasing categories like “Tradition and Community” and “Fashion and Innovation.” Popular local figure Humberto Silva will liven up the crowd at 10:30 PM, followed by a fireworks display at midnight.

Praia da Luz will also be buzzing with activity as the Clube Desportivo e Recreativo Luzense presents three stages featuring a range of musical acts.
