Now, we’re thrilled to see that our community is going even further in embracing these values. This September, Lagos will once again take part in European Mobility Week, from the 16th to the 22nd, an international initiative championing sustainability, better mobility, and a healthier way of life.

Backed by a dynamic mix of public and private organisations, as well as local clubs and associations, the week will be buzzing with activities. From walking tours to sporting events and school-led projects, there’s something for everyone. What’s more, AONDA’s urban transport network will be offering complimentary rides throughout the event, making it even easier to get involved.

A key focus this year is on engaging the younger generation. Between the 18th and 20th of September, primary school children will get hands-on experience with cycling through the ‘Foot on the Pedal’ project. And on the 20th, students from Santa Maria Primary School will embark on an exciting exploration of sustainable transport—whether on foot, by bike, or bus—while discovering more of Lagos’ charming surroundings.

But the real excitement builds towards Sunday, 22nd September, as Lagos takes part in European Car Free Day. The highlight? A fantastic group bike ride along a newly developed section of the Ecovia do Litoral. Kicking off at 9:30 am on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, near the pedestrian bridge, this scenic ride will take you towards Meia Praia and Vale da Lama. Organised by the Lagos Town Council and supported by a host of local clubs and businesses, including Associação de Amigos de Almádena, Grupo Popular das Portelas, and Ciclo Clube de Lagos, it’s an event for everyone—families, friends, young and old alike! If cycling isn’t your thing, don’t worry—the iconic Lagos Tourist Train will be offering a special free ride along the Marina – Ponta da Piedade – Marina route, courtesy of the council and local sponsors.

In addition to the activities, Lagos will also be showcasing its long-term initiatives to promote sustainable mobility. These efforts align perfectly with European Mobility Week’s core mission—driving behaviour change that supports environmental protection, from improving air quality to reducing noise pollution and tackling climate change, all in step with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By getting involved in European Mobility Week, Lagos is once again proving how local communities can lead the charge in creating a healthier, greener future. This is our chance to rethink how we move, live, and engage with our surroundings. So, we invite everyone to join the movement, share in this experience, and be a part of the transformation towards a more sustainable Lagos.

Let’s pedal, walk, and ride together—because together, we can make a real difference.

In our previous blogs, we’ve delved into how the local wildlife and fauna here in Lagos foster a natural and holistic lifestyle.
