Portimão Dances into 2025 with a National Festival Celebration

Whether you’re a local resident or planning a future visit, one date to mark in your 2025 calendar is the Portugal a Dançar festival.

As highlighted in our recent features, Portimão, a city renowned for its cultural vitality and strong sense of community, will further solidify its reputation in 2025 as it hosts the grand finale of Portugal a Dançar. This prestigious national dance competition brings together the country’s most promising talent. From 24 to 26 October, the city will come alive with the rhythm of creativity, passion, and unity.

What began as a grassroots initiative to spotlight dance talent across Portugal has grown into a nationwide movement. Regional qualifying rounds lead up to the eagerly anticipated final weekend in Portimão. This year’s edition includes several exciting new elements: a mentoring scheme to support emerging dancers in refining their craft, and travelling trade fairs that connect artists with fresh opportunities and audiences.

A key highlight of the festival will be the inaugural Portugal a Dançar Awards Gala, an elegant evening dedicated to celebrating excellence in choreography, performance, and artistic innovation. This glittering occasion will bring together rising stars and established figures in the dance world, honouring both national and international contributors who continue to elevate the art form.

Yet, what truly sets Portugal a Dançar apart is its spirit of inclusivity. Welcoming solo performers and ensembles of all ages and styles, the festival embodies a shared artistic identity. Whether contemporary, classical, urban, or traditional, every genre finds its place on stage.

At a recent press conference held at TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão, anticipation filled the room. A powerful performance by DancExpression, 2024 finalists, served as a reminder of the festival’s ability to inspire and spotlight exceptional talent.

Deputy Mayor Teresa Mendes captured the city’s excitement perfectly:
“Portimão is proud to host an event that not only celebrates dance but also reinforces our city as a cultural beacon.”

As the year unfolds, Portimão looks ahead to welcoming dancers, visitors, and locals alike for a weekend where movement becomes language and every step tells a story.

Throughout these articles, we have provided many recommendations on where to visit and what to look out for in the Algarve. But you might be wondering—where are the best spots to take stunning photographs? Well, we’ve got you covered.

The Algarve, Portugal’s southern gem, is a paradise for photographers. With its golden cliffs, hidden caves, and endless stretches of pristine beaches, this region offers an unrivalled canvas for capturing breathtaking landscapes. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a world of dramatic seascapes and vibrant sunsets, the Algarve is the perfect destination.

One of the most mesmerising locations is Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. As you stand on the cliff’s edge, jagged limestone formations stretch out into turquoise waters, creating a scene so surreal it feels like a painting. The best time to visit is during sunrise or sunset when the golden light enhances the warm tones of the rocks, casting long shadows that add depth to your images. Boats weaving through the natural arches below provide a dynamic element to your shots.

Not far away lies Praia da Marinha, often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. As you descend the cliffside staircase, you are greeted by towering rock formations—some standing defiantly against the waves, others eroded into delicate arches. The contrast between the golden sand and the deep blues of the Atlantic creates a mesmerising palette. This is a place where nature’s artistry takes centre stage, making every angle a masterpiece waiting to be captured.

A short boat ride away is the legendary Benagil Cave, a hidden wonder accessible only by water. As you paddle into the cavern, a natural skylight casts an ethereal glow on the sandy floor. The interplay of light and shadow inside the cave makes for a photographer’s dream, with the deep blue of the ocean seeping in from the cave’s entrance, adding a mystical quality to every frame.

For those seeking a more rugged and dramatic backdrop, Cabo de São Vicente awaits at the very edge of Europe. Towering cliffs plunge sharply into the roaring Atlantic, with a lighthouse standing as a sentinel over the vast ocean. The powerful winds and crashing waves create an intense atmosphere, perfect for capturing moody, cinematic landscapes. As the sun sets, the horizon ignites in hues of orange and crimson, making this one of the most spectacular sunset spots in Portugal.

Photographing the Algarve is not just about the locations; it’s about the experience of witnessing nature’s raw beauty unfold before your eyes. And for some, the best view might just be from your own home in Reserva da Luz, where the Algarve’s breathtaking scenery becomes part of your everyday life.

So, pack your camera, embrace the adventure, and let the Algarve’s magic inspire your photography.

Portimão Celebrates its 100th Anniversary

Living in the West Algarve offers an exceptional combination of natural beauty, serene beaches, and top-tier leisure facilities. However, what truly distinguishes the region is the remarkable convenience it offers for daily living. With everything you need — from essential services and shopping to healthcare facilities — all within easy reach, the West Algarve ensures that life here remains as relaxed and efficient as its breathtaking landscapes. This seamless integration of stunning surroundings and modern conveniences is what makes living in the West Algarve truly unique.

At the heart of this region lies Portimão, less than 15 minutes from Reserva da Luz, which has just marked a significant milestone — its 100th anniversary of city status. We now reflect on Portimão’s transformation from a modest Roman settlement to one of the Algarve’s most prominent and cherished cities. The city’s rich history spans centuries, beginning as a Phoenician settlement before becoming a key trading port under Roman influence. The Romans named it Portus Magonis, recognizing the area’s potential for trade and strategic importance.

In 711, during the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the Moors established Portimão as an important stronghold. They fortified the area to control vital trade routes, shaping its growth for centuries. After the Knights of Santiago captured Portimão in 1290, it began to thrive as a fishing hub. The construction of fortifications, including São João in Ferragudo (1643) and Santa Catarina in Praia da Rocha (1621), was essential for defending the town from pirate raids, safeguarding the flourishing trade in figs, olives, wine, and sugar.

Portimão’s journey toward city status began in 1435 when it was granted town status by King Alfonso V. Over time, the town expanded, and in 1453, it established a new settlement named São Lourenço Barrosa. By 1476, it was renamed Vila Nova de Portimão, under the ownership of Dom Gonçalo Vaz de Castelo Branco. This area later evolved into the vibrant urban center that exists today.

The city’s prosperity grew in the 16th century, driven by its shipbuilding industry, and by 1573, it attracted royal attention, with King Sebastian visiting the town. The construction of the Portimão Bridge in 1876, initiated by Viscount Francisco de Almeida Coelho Bívar, significantly improved the city’s connectivity. Portimão’s history also includes notable figures such as Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the seventh president of Portugal, who tirelessly advocated for the city and the region until his death in 1941.

As the 19th century saw a decline in trade along the Arade River, Portimão adapted by turning to tourism, bolstered by its prosperous fishing industry. The opening of the Feu Hermanos canning factory in 1902 became a cornerstone of the local economy, and today, the factory building houses the Museum of Culture and Heritage. The coastal suburb of Praia da Rocha also became a prominent tourist destination, known for its scenic beaches and luxury resorts.

Portimão continued to modernize in the 20th century, with the establishment of Portimonense Sporting Clube in 1914 and the development of notable hotels, including the iconic Hotel Viola. In 1924, Portimão was officially granted city status, and today it is home to over 60,000 residents. The city embraces its rich history while looking forward to a dynamic future, serving as a hub for culture, commerce, and tourism.

On this 100th anniversary of city status, Portimão stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, offering an enviable quality of life to its residents and visitors alike. Feliz Aniversário, Portimão!

For those who call the West Algarve home or have experienced its breathtaking beauty, the stunning allure of its beaches need no introduction. The Algarve, with its golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, is a paradise that draws beach lovers from around the globe. It is, therefore, no surprise that this coastal gem has once again been crowned World’s Best Beach Destination at the prestigious World Travel Awards.

Often referred to as the “Oscars of Tourism,” the World Travel Awards celebrate excellence across the travel and tourism industry, with winners chosen by influential leaders worldwide.

“This award highlights the exceptional allure of the Algarve coast,” stated the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA). “Stretching over 200 kilometres, the Algarve’s beaches captivate visitors with their diversity—ranging from expansive golden sands and secluded coves to majestic cliffs.”

This year, the Algarve’s reputation for excellence was further reinforced by several distinguished accolades. A total of 86 beaches received Blue Flag certification from the European Blue Flag Association, 69 were awarded Gold Quality status by Quercus, and 13 were designated as Zero Pollution beaches by the ZERO association. Remarkably, 47 beaches are fully accessible, demonstrating the Algarve’s commitment to inclusivity.

“It’s an immense honour to receive this recognition again,” said André Gomes, President of the Algarve Tourism Bureau. “Winning Europe’s Leading Beach Destination 10 times attests to the region’s undeniable charm, but being named the World’s Leading Beach Destination elevates our standing even further. This award is not just a point of pride—it’s a responsibility to uphold the highest standards and continue delivering extraordinary experiences that exceed visitors’ expectations. This achievement reflects the collective dedication of the entire region,” he added.

So, the next time you gaze out to sea, remember that the beaches of the Algarve are truly one of a kind, shaped by the timeless interplay of nature and culture. Whether it’s the golden cliffs rising like sentinels above turquoise waters, the secret coves waiting to be discovered, or the vibrant communities that breathe life into the shoreline, the Algarve offers more than just a destination—it’s an invitation to connect with the world in its purest form. And who knows? Perhaps the next wave that laps at your feet carries the whispers of adventures yet to come.

Many people in the Algarve cherish the outdoors and the freshness of food available, valuing local flavours and the vibrant culture that surrounds them. If this resonates with you, a visit—or a return—to the Lagos Municipal Market might be just the thing. This bustling hub brings together locals and visitors alike to explore some of the finest produce and traditional goods the region has to offer. More than just a place to shop, the market is a cornerstone of Lagos’s identity, often providing the ingredients for the delicious meals served in restaurants or prepared at home.

As 2024 draws to a close, the historic Avenida Municipal Market in Lagos is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary—a milestone that honours its role as a cultural and social cornerstone of the city since the early 20th century.

Dating back to approximately 1924, the market officially opened its doors on 15 January 1925. Since then, it has stood as a testament to Lagos’s rich heritage and communal spirit. To commemorate this significant occasion, a series of events will take place from 19 October 2024 to 15 January 2025, culminating in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the launch of the book ‘Mercado Municipal da Avenida (1924) – Um Mercado Centenário’, dedicated to chronicling the market’s enduring legacy.

The centenary celebrations promise a variety of engaging activities. Guided tours will provide visitors with an insight into the market’s storied past, connecting its evolution to the broader history of Lagos’s markets, some of which remain vibrant hubs today. In addition, the festivities will feature live music performances and cooking demonstrations, showcasing the rich flavours of the region’s culinary traditions and the outstanding local produce available at the market.

For both residents and visitors, the market offers yet another reason why the western Algarve is so special—not just for its breathtaking natural beauty but for its lifestyle, which celebrates connection, flavour, and heritage. Whether you’re a long-time local or a newcomer, the Avenida Municipal Market stands as a reminder of what makes living here truly feel like home.

Luz Cultura: A Cultural Hub in West Algarve

The West Algarve is known for its vibrant year-round cultural scene, and at the heart of this is Luz Cultura, a centre dedicated to fostering local talent and creativity. Located near the beach in Luz and just steps from Reserva da Luz, Luz Cultura plays a vital role in the area’s artistic community. We at Reserva da Luz are proud to support such initiatives and fondly recall hosting a performance by the talented Luiza at the launch of Phase II of our development last year.

Since its opening in 2021, Luz Cultura has quickly become a creative hub, particularly for young talent. It all began with a Summer Talent Camp for children aged 5-8, and today, it offers a range of workshops and activities aimed at nurturing creativity across various artistic disciplines. Its location by the beach creates an inspiring environment for both participants and teachers.

Luiza, a gifted musician who leads the centre’s music workshops, is at the helm of Luz Cultura. She is joined by a team of talented local artists, including Desiree de Rooij, a fellow musician; Lewis Davies, a dance specialist; Heike Schuller, who leads the theatre sessions; Vera Faria Goncalves, a painter; and Claire Lloyd, a sculptor known for her striking public art, including the famous “Chairs” roundabout in Lagos.

Luiza’s Vision for Luz Cultura

Luiza’s passion for supporting local talent is evident in her collaborative approach. She believes in the power of sharing creative spaces and working alongside other artists to foster a thriving arts community in the region. Her goal is to inspire local talent and unite people through art and music.

As a mother, Luiza wants to expand her offerings to include music groups for mothers and toddlers, nurturing creativity from an early age. She’s also excited about starting local choirs, drawing on her background as a singer, pianist, and conductor, having trained in Portugal and the Netherlands.

Luiza’s Journey: From Moldova to Algarve

Born to a family of musicians in Moldova, Luiza moved to Portugal at the age of 13, where her love for the country grew over the years. She settled in Cascais before moving to Lisbon to further her music education. At 23, she relocated to Holland to refine her musical and linguistic skills. However, her love for Portugal eventually brought her back, and she decided to settle in the beautiful Algarve, specifically in Luz, where she now leads Luz Cultura and continues to inspire the local community.

Through Luz Cultura, Luiza aims to cultivate a rich cultural scene, providing opportunities for creative expression while enriching the local arts community.

When people think of outdoor activities in the Algarve, sports like golf, surfing, and sailing often come to mind. However, one sport that is rapidly growing in popularity is Padel. With over 25 million players worldwide, this energetic game has become a hit in Portugal, and particularly in the Algarve.

A shining example of this surge can be found at the Ocean Padel Club in Luz, located just a stone’s throw from Reserva da Luz. Led by Patrik and his experienced team, the club has become a hotspot for both casual and competitive play. The Ocean Club recently hosted the inaugural Reserva da Luz Grand Slam and continues to draw attention with events like the PDL Academy. The academy was led by British actor Ryan Thomas, winner of Dancing on Ice 2024, whose personal connection to the Algarve stems from his fiancée’s wellness business. Combining Padel with unique local experiences like paddleboarding and coastal hikes, Thomas has helped put this vibrant club on the map.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, Padel is a fun, strategic game played on small courts enclosed by glass walls, adding an exciting element of rebounding shots. It’s easy to learn, but as players improve, the game becomes a more competitive and strategic test of skill.

Padel’s appeal lies not only in its dynamic gameplay but also in its accessibility. Its low-impact nature makes it an attractive alternative for ex-tennis and golf enthusiasts who want to stay active without risking injury. The Ocean Padel Club’s welcoming atmosphere has become a social hub for locals and expats, offering a unique way to stay fit and connect with others in the Algarve.

As Padel continues to grow in popularity, the Ocean Padel Club adds yet another reason why the West Algarve is an attractive place to live. It offers an active lifestyle and a close-knit community in a beautiful coastal setting.

In our previous blogs, we’ve delved into how the local wildlife and fauna here in Lagos foster a natural and holistic lifestyle. Now, we’re thrilled to see that our community is going even further in embracing these values. This September, Lagos will once again take part in European Mobility Week, from the 16th to the 22nd, an international initiative championing sustainability, better mobility, and a healthier way of life.

Backed by a dynamic mix of public and private organisations, as well as local clubs and associations, the week will be buzzing with activities. From walking tours to sporting events and school-led projects, there’s something for everyone. What’s more, AONDA’s urban transport network will be offering complimentary rides throughout the event, making it even easier to get involved.

A key focus this year is on engaging the younger generation. Between the 18th and 20th of September, primary school children will get hands-on experience with cycling through the ‘Foot on the Pedal’ project. And on the 20th, students from Santa Maria Primary School will embark on an exciting exploration of sustainable transport—whether on foot, by bike, or bus—while discovering more of Lagos’ charming surroundings.

But the real excitement builds towards Sunday, 22nd September, as Lagos takes part in European Car Free Day. The highlight? A fantastic group bike ride along a newly developed section of the Ecovia do Litoral. Kicking off at 9:30 am on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, near the pedestrian bridge, this scenic ride will take you towards Meia Praia and Vale da Lama. Organised by the Lagos Town Council and supported by a host of local clubs and businesses, including Associação de Amigos de Almádena, Grupo Popular das Portelas, and Ciclo Clube de Lagos, it’s an event for everyone—families, friends, young and old alike! If cycling isn’t your thing, don’t worry—the iconic Lagos Tourist Train will be offering a special free ride along the Marina – Ponta da Piedade – Marina route, courtesy of the council and local sponsors.

In addition to the activities, Lagos will also be showcasing its long-term initiatives to promote sustainable mobility. These efforts align perfectly with European Mobility Week’s core mission—driving behaviour change that supports environmental protection, from improving air quality to reducing noise pollution and tackling climate change, all in step with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By getting involved in European Mobility Week, Lagos is once again proving how local communities can lead the charge in creating a healthier, greener future. This is our chance to rethink how we move, live, and engage with our surroundings. So, we invite everyone to join the movement, share in this experience, and be a part of the transformation towards a more sustainable Lagos.

Let’s pedal, walk, and ride together—because together, we can make a real difference.

On the shores of Praia da Luz, within the beautiful Algarve region, lies a remarkable tradition that offers a unique glimpse into local heritage: Banho 29.

The 29th Bath Festival, a beloved event in Lagos and the Algarve, takes place on August 29th in both Lagos and Praia da Luz. This celebration features invigorating sea baths and performances by renowned musical acts.

According to local folklore, the sea bath on August 29th is believed to drive away evil spirits and is reputed to be as beneficial as 29 separate baths. The tradition, highlighted by the municipality of Lagos, has endured over the centuries, transforming a simple purification ritual into a festive occasion held in iconic locations such as Cais da Solaria, Jardim da Constitution, and Praia da Luz.

With August’s warm weather, Banho 29 provides an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty. The pleasant climate complements the experience, allowing you to relax and enjoy the calming effects of the thermal waters.

The Lagos Study Center invites visitors to travel back in time with a historical reenactment along Avenida dos Descobrimentos and Praia da Batata. This event recounts when locals would bring their picnics to enjoy a bath in the sea. The festivities kick off at 6:00 PM at Cais da Solaria and Jardim da Constitution, featuring a variety of entertainment. At 8:30 PM, ACRAL will host traditional swimwear competitions, showcasing categories like “Tradition and Community” and “Fashion and Innovation.” Popular local figure Humberto Silva will liven up the crowd at 10:30 PM, followed by a fireworks display at midnight.

Praia da Luz will also be buzzing with activity as the Clube Desportivo e Recreativo Luzense presents three stages featuring a range of musical acts.
